Manduca produced by Wickelkinder GmbH

It all began with the founding of the company wickelkinder GmbH in Marburg in 2002. Petra Schachtner established the company based on the firm belief that babywearing not only strengthens the bond between parent and child but also represents a practical and natural part of everyday family life. At a time when ergonomic baby carriers were still a niche market in Germany, the company grew to become one of Europe's best-known providers of baby carriers.

A major milestone was reached in 2007 with the launch of the Manduca baby carrier. The product was developed based on the combined experience of babywearing consultants, parents, and product designers. The goal was to create a carrier that offered both ergonomic support for the child and exceptional comfort for the wearer. Manduca quickly gained recognition for its ease of use, adaptability, and support of the recommended ergonomic spread-squat position for babies. As a result, it resonated with a growing number of families seeking closeness, mobility, and attachment-oriented parenting solutions.

Over the following years, Manduca became one of the most recognized baby carrier brands in German-speaking countries and expanded its presence throughout Europe and international markets. The product portfolio continued to grow, introducing new solutions for different parenting needs. Among these additions was the Manduca Sling, an elastic baby wrap specifically designed for newborns and young infants. Later, the company launched the Manduca Twist, a half-buckle carrier that combines the flexibility of a wrap with the convenience of a structured carrier. Additional models and variations further expanded the range and allowed parents to choose the most suitable carrying solution for their individual preferences and their child's developmental stage.

The company's commitment to quality, ergonomic design, and the use of sustainable and baby-safe materials resulted in numerous positive reviews and industry recognitions. For many years, the Manduca brand was regarded as a benchmark for premium baby carriers and established itself as one of the leading names in the European babywearing market.

Despite its strong market position, Wickelkinder GmbH faced increasing economic challenges in its later years. According to company statements, rising production and procurement costs, changing market conditions, and internal structural difficulties placed significant pressure on the business. As these increased costs could only be passed on to retailers and consumers to a limited extent, the company's financial situation deteriorated. In 2025, Wickelkinder GmbH ultimately filed for insolvency.

By that time, Manduca had spent nearly two decades establishing itself as one of Europe's most successful ergonomic baby carrier brands. While detailed revenue and profit figures were not regularly disclosed by the company, the brand had achieved broad distribution across numerous European countries and maintained a strong position within the premium baby carrier segment.

The history of Wickelkinder GmbH remains closely linked to the success story of Manduca. The company played a significant role in shaping the modern babywearing market and helped make ergonomic babywearing a mainstream choice for families throughout Europe.

The Manduca brand was sold and continues to operate under the same name.
